EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Jr. Academy
The Delta Jr. Academy seeks to encourage and support the pursuit of educational achievement of
African-American youth in the Sacramento community. The program fosters the pursuit of careers in
the areas of science, math and technology. Fifteen girls, ages 9-15 attended the academy this year. The
program was divided into two main subject areas: academics and personal development. Academics
included a book club, focus on science (experiments with water and energy), communication (newsletter)
and a field trip to Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley. Personal development included etiquette,
community service, journal writings, and an end of the year celebration.
Delta GEMS
Twenty members of our chapter currently participate in mentoring teen-age girls as a part of our Senior Academy program. This year we
partnered with San Juan Unified School District, the Fostering Hope organization and the Coalition of 100 Black Women to receive a $2,000
grant to support our mentoring program. Our goal is to promote career development, health awareness, cultural awareness, nutrition,
health and fitness activities, and literacy activities for these teen girls. We also focused on the enrichment and enhancement of self-esteem
and scholastic improvement through math, science and technology activities. Members of our chapter attended SEE training at the Cluster
Meeting in Oakland. Events for this year included: book reading and discussion (The Coldest Winter Ever by Sista Soldier), slumber party
with Baby Think it Overs (pregnancy prevention), Science field trip to the San Jose Technology Museum, a fitness and spa day, Delta
Youth State, participation in Summit V HIV/AIDS walk, Martin Luther King Jr. Walk, financial planning workshop, and participation
in the Ebony Fashion Show as hostesses. Twenty-five girls participated this year.
Ebony Fashion Show
Each year, our chapter hosts the Ebony Fashion Show to help support our scholarship recipients. The event
sells to over 800 people and is one of our top fundraising activities.
Delta Boat Cruise
The "Deltas on the Delta" has become an annual activity that we host. Funds from this event help to support our
chapter scholarships. We also sponsored a boat ride where we raised another $1500.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH
Capitol City Steppers
This year our chapter started a Step Team. Both alumnae and collegiate sorors are participating (25) on the step team, as well as other alumnae sorors who participate in exercises for conditioning and physical fitness. The step team practices at least twice a week. They have performed at several venues this year, including the California State Fair, the Crocker Museum (Black History Month), local high schools within the area, Cal State University Sacramento, and Cal State University Chico. We are also planning to participate at the National Convention in Las Vegas.
Delta Days in Sacramento
Sacramento Alumnae Chapter plays a pivitol role in the Delta Days in Sacramento event.
In March, over 300 sorors and youth celebrated 20 years of upholding the legacy
of our Founders by participating in workshops, caucuses and dialogues with legislators on various political issues.
2004 Olympic Team Trials
Our chapter volunteered for the 2004 Olympic Trails
in July. Sorors served in several capacities including hospitality, event information desk, banquets hosts,
awards ceremony, and packet stuffing.
POLITICAL AWARENESS AND INVOLVEMENT
This year our chapter was very involved in the area of Social Action. We invited the local President of the NAACP to our September
chapter meeting. Twenty sorors joined the NAACP on the spot. We also sent our Chapter President, Vice President and another member to Delta Days in
the Nation's Capital. We helped sponsor Delta Days in Sacramento and over 17 sorors registered and participated in activities all weekend
with approximately 20 chapter members in attendance at the luncheon on Sunday. We also participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. March
and rally and conducted voter registration as a part of the GOTV campaign. We submitted documentation of our social action involvement
in the form of a scrapbook for National recognition. Our most recent Social Action event was a reception for
Assemblywoman Karen Bass of the 47th District, which was held on January 23,2005.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Our housing committee conducted a survey and solicited commitment and support from chapter members about the possibility of purchasing real estate for our chapter in the form of a Delta house.
We participated in the 2004 Black Expo, which is a yearly event for members of the African-American community featuring black businesses and activities during Black History month.
Sacramento Delta Foundation, Inc. provides supplemental income to the public service funds of our chapter. Assets from interest bearing accounts are donated to a variety of charitable purposes once our profit reaches $35,000. We currently have approximately $20,000 in assets.
We support black businesses within our community such as Gene's Florist and also Vision Cellars, and Jamaican Holiday, all of whom were sponsors and patrons at our annual Ebony Fashion Show. Other patrons included: UPS, The Sacramento National Dental Association, and other black entrepreneurs.
This year we have completed the application and permit process to sell fireworks in the community. This is a big fund raising opportunity for scholarships since most fireworks stands net approximately $10,000.00.
